John,
I'm familiar with the Kalamazoo from Augusta to downtown Kalamazoo. Although
I paddle a solo canoe, I've paddled it with kayakers, and I know it's an
easy stretch of river. I have put in at the public access site on Morrow
Lake and paddled upstream past Galesburg, until the current got a little too
fast and the water a little too shallow to go further, then turned around
and took it easy on the way back.
Below Morrow Dam is also a nice paddle. I've only done that part going
downstream, with both kayaking and canoeing friends. It wouldn't be too hard
to paddle that part upstream with a two-bladed paddle. If you're intent on
paddling both upstream then downstream, you could put in at Verburg
Park--Paterson St. at the river--paddle upstream to Comstock or Morrow Dam,
then back.
