I'll be driving from North Carolina to Rockville, MD, on Saturday
(lord willin' and the creek don't rise) by US-29 through
Charlottesville, VA.
About 10 miles south of Charlottesville is Pancake Falls on the North
Fork of the Hardware River. Roger Corbett rated the NF Class II-V. I
would rate it II(III+) -- Class II with one Class III+. But that Class
III+ is the best Kodak Moment a Class III boater ever saw. Really,
really steep and dramatic. But not all that difficult.
I could also see my way clear to checking out the South Fork of the
Hardware, which Roger rated II-IV, and maybe one or two other creeks
in the Charlottesville area, if any Intermediate boater(s) wanted to
meet me so that we would have at least two vehicles, for shuttling.
I could leave Winston-Salem early and be at Pancake Falls by around
10:00, and we wouldn't stay long at the NF Hardware, so there would be
ample opportunity to look at some other stream(s).
I'd want to be on the road to Maryland by around 4:00, though, since I
have business in Rockville that is keeping me from going to the Gauley
Festival (oh, oh, and the Upper Meadow will be running, the
Fruitbasket rivers... argh, what a bad year to miss Gauley Festival!)
So eMail me if you are an Intermediate boater looking for something to
do in central Virginia Saturday, Sept. 20.

OK, OK; computer programming for scientific research also matters.
